We need to let our children have a childhood.  Don’t let them grow up too fast!

The 2011 Mutual theme is the 13th Article of Faith.

“We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men.  Indeed we may say we follow the admonition of Paul - We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things.  If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report, or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.”

Are we seeking after these things?  Or are we lowering our standards? Are we setting a good example for our children?

When we finally got pregnant with baby #4, we both knew that we were done.  It didn’t matter if it was a boy or a girl, we were done.  We waited until she was born to make sure I was thinking clearly, but it didn’t change…we were done.  So The Doctor got the big “V.”

But that wasn’t the monumental moment.

After she was born and I knew for certain that she was a girl (ultrasounds can be tricky!), I gave away all my boy clothes and toys.  Can you imagine how much room that saved me in my storage?

And then, as The Princess grew up and out of each stage, because we were done having children, I was able to get rid of the bassinet, the swing, the car seat, the baby clothes, the crib, the baby toys, etc.  No more storing them.

But that wasn’t the monumental moment.

The moment came the day that I was able to go around the house and remove the outlet covers.  No more pulling them out just to plug something in.  They were empty and ready to be used at any time.

That was monumental to me, not to mention much more convenient!

I love having a camcorder.
I love to go back and watch when my kids were little and how cute they were.  Seeing their chubby legs and hearing their giggles always brings tears to my eyes.  I didn't know how easy life was then.
I love watching as they grow up...rolling over, crawling, walking, talking, riding a 2-wheeler, Easter, Christmas, birthday...  Every moment is to be treasured and enjoyed.
WAIT...Not the band concert!  Argh!  It was painful to sit through live!  Oh, wait!  There it is again!  They held the concert twice to accommodate more people, so I had to go to both concerts.  And I had to tape them both.
I feel the need to video tape everything they do.  Even if they do it twice.  I don't want to watch it twice.  I am not sure I want to watch it once!  LOL  So how do I delete one of the concerts?  And which one do I delete?  The one where he played perfectly, or the one where he goofed up and made a cute face?
And am I ever going to watch that soccer game from 3rd grade?  I just don't see me sitting down in 20 years saying, "Let's watch a bunch of 9 year olds run up and down a field!"
However...
My family didn't have a camcorder growing up until I was in high school.  And one of our favorite things to watch when we get together is when my dad video taped the morning of a first day of school.  My older brother was starting his senior year and my little sister was starting kindergarten.  It is so funny to see us interact and what we are wearing and what we are concerned about.  For instance,
Mom: "You need to iron your shirt."
Me: "Mom, it's fine."
Mom: "You really need to iron it. Kids might make fun of you."
Me: "No one is going to laugh at me because my shirt is not ironed."
Annoying younger brother: Points at me and starts to laugh hysterically.
Me: Roll my eyes and wonder what on earth I did to deserve such a twit for a brother.
Now, I know this narrative doesn't do it justice, so if you really want to see it, come on over.  It makes for great TV!
So I guess what the point of this post is that if you have a camcorder, turn it on more.  Don't just tape the games and concerts.  Tape the every day stuff.  Who cares if the house is a mess.  My dad even taped the contents of the fridge.  But in doing so, he got the kitchen and the decorations and things that brought back lots of memories.
And you get in front of it more.  Or if you hubby does the taping, get him in front.  Those are the memories your kids will watch over and over.  Trust me.
Now go pick it up and tape something!
I used to wish that I could listen to the speakers in church.
Now I wish that I had a baby to take out to the hall when a speaker was putting me to sleep.  LOL
I used to wish that I could be done with babies.
Now I wish that I could have more access to a baby to cuddle and hold.  I really miss that.  There are no more babies in our families on either side and with being in Primary, I never get to hold a baby any more.  It's sad.
I used to wish that my mom didn't work so she could baby-sit for me more.  Even though she baby-sat all the time for my brothers, I never liked to ask her because she was always so busy.
Now I wish she she was on the same track as my kids so we could go shopping together and go to lunch more often without kids tagging along!
I used to wish that I had more money to buy scrapbooking supplies.
Now I wish that I could find time to actually scrapbook, now that I have tons of supplies.  When I get the time, I first have to clean off my desk and put away all the stuff that has accumulated in my room.  By the time that is done, I am exhausted and there is no time to scrapbook!
I used to wish that my kids would hurry and grow up.
Now I wish that they were little again and I could go back (with what I know now) and spend more time cuddling and reading and playing with them.  Life goes by so fast!
In 5 days I will officially have a child in high school, a child in junior high, a child in 5th grade, and a child in kindergarten.
I feel old. Really old. Where did the time go?
I love my boys. I really do. But now that I look back, they were so much easier to deal with 7 years ago. I thought it was so hard then and we had so many problems, but compared to what they are facing now and the temptations they have to deal with, I just wish I could go back in time and tell my old self to enjoy it while it lasts. But I can't, so I will tell you.
Enjoy your children while they are young. Yes, you are dealing with potty training and tantrums and so many things, but trust me, it's going to get easier and harder at the same time. I can leave them without getting a babysitter. In fact other than the 1 time I hired a babysitter for The Princess, I haven't paid a babysitter in over 6 years. But now we deal with girls and hair and eye rolling and yelling and fights over computer time and the many, many, many temptations that Satan is throwing at them.
So go cuddle them and hold them close. Let them be silly and crazy. They won't be small forever. And neither will their problems.

Remember how when you were little, you would twirl in circles for so long, and then stop and you were so dizzy, but it was so much fun and you did it over and over and over?

Yeah, I can't do that anymore either. I miss that.

Remember when you were a kid and could roll down a hill and how much fun it was and you didn't get sick, you just got up and did it over and over and over?

Yeah, I can't do that anymore. I miss that.
